HISTORY AND POLITICAL. EDUCATION SHAPTA ASSESSMENT 2023

This History and Political Education assessment resource is designed to support learners in developing a stronger understanding of historical events, political affairs and the social developments that have shaped Uganda and East Africa. It provides learners with an opportunity to practise applying knowledge to real-life situations while preparing for school-based assessments and examinations under the Lower Secondary Curriculum.

The assessment presents learners with a range of activities that encourage them to think critically about the past and its connection to present-day society. The questions provide opportunities to explore issues such as finding out about the past, traditional ways of resolving conflicts, the importance of studying history, museums and sources of historical information, migration and contemporary social challenges. These areas help learners appreciate how historical knowledge can be used to understand and respond to situations in their communities.

Teachers can use the resource as a revision tool, classroom assessment, homework activity or preparation material for examinations. Individual activities can be selected for group discussions, debates or written exercises. The resource can also help teachers identify areas where learners require additional explanation and provide appropriate remedial activities.

For learners, the assessment provides valuable practice in interpreting scenarios, identifying relevant information and constructing clear responses. Rather than focusing only on memorisation, learners are encouraged to relate historical and political knowledge to situations that affect individuals, families, communities and the wider society. This can strengthen skills such as critical thinking, communication, problem-solving and decision-making.

The material is also useful for collaborative learning. Learners can work in groups to discuss questions, compare their ideas and develop appropriate responses before presenting their findings to the class. Such activities can promote confidence and encourage learners to appreciate different perspectives when studying historical and political issues.
